Paramedics face a range of health hazards

MILLIONS OF DOLLARS RECOVERED FOR OUR CLIENTS
|

The days of paramedics in Illinois consist of responses to emergencies. During these trips, you typically put your life on the line to save others. Exposure to the hazards of infectious diseases and the risks of contact with bodily fluids and blood of others are par for the course. Also, as a paramedic, you work in a variety of environments, both indoors and outdoors, and frequently among moving vehicles when you deal with crash victims.

As if those do not present enough danger, you will also have to deal with hazardous chemicals, excessive noise and severe psychological stress factors. The fact that you often have to lift and carry patients of varied sizes puts a toll on your body, leading to frequent time off work due to musculoskeletal injuries.

The hazards you will face

While paramedics face almost all the workplace hazards that workers in other industries face, the following potential injuries and illnesses are more prevalent in your occupation:

  • Psychological strain: The constant contact with life-or-death circumstances can cause nightmares, depression and severe anxiety along with interrupted sleep patterns. You will frequently have to make on-the-spot critical decisions, adding to the psychological stresses.
  • Blood-borne pathogens: Paramedics face many risks of infection by viruses such as Hepatitis B, C and HIV, which may lead to AIDS. Your work involves sharp instruments and surgical needles, and your frequent contact with bleeding patients with unknown health conditions is risky. Along with the threats of puncture wounds, bodily fluids and blood of patients can splash into your face if you work without a face mask and eye protection.
  • Physical assault: Emergency workers have no choice when it comes to the locations to which they respond. In many cases, you do your work among street gang members or intoxicated bystanders, and assaults on paramedics occur frequently.
  • Excessive noise: Paramedics rely on excellent hearing to distinguish calls for help and other cues; however, the sounds of engines, air horns and sirens continually expose you to excessive noise. Power tools for extrication and forced entry also contribute to the hearing loss that may affect you.
  • Musculoskeletal injuries: The nature of your work requires constant kneeling, bending, stretching and lifting. The impact these repetitive motions have on your body can lead to occupational injuries that cause loss of workdays.

Where to get help

If you suffer a work-related illness or injury — mental or physical — during your job as a paramedic, you may find comfort knowing that the Illinois workers’ compensation insurance system is on your side. You may file a benefits claim to cover medical expenses and lost income. It may be a challenge to prove that your condition is work-related, and this is where the value of an experienced workers’ compensation attorney comes in. The lawyer can navigate the claims process on your behalf.

    "What a great experience!"
I strongly recommend Haxel Law Firm to everyone. In fact, he has now taken on my fiance as a client. Thanks Marty for what you did for me!
    - David S.
    "Never Left Out"
Martin did an exceptional job on my case. I was always kept informed throughout the whole process.
    - Janet S.
    "Truly The Best"
Marty is not only a great lawyer, but a great person!
    - Bobby D.
"Very Positive Experience Representing My Daughter"
Very responsive and patient answering all my questions. I hope to never be in a situation of needing a lawyer again, but if I did, I would 100% contact Martin again.
    - Jim P.
    "No One Better"
I was referred to Martin by my original attorney. My original attorney didn't want to spend the time and money to represent me because my case was going to be difficult, time-consuming, and against the City of Champaign. I am so glad that Martin was willing to take my case and see it through. If you have a "hidden injury" like me or even an obvious injury Martin will handle it very professionally and give it the attention that you deserve.
    - John M.
    "Martin Truly Cares About You"
I had a life-changing experience 4 years ago. Mr Haxel continually worked with the insurance company to settle the workman comp claim. Mr. Haxel was always available to call if you had any concerns and was always willing to listen to you.
    - Marvin S.
    "Thank You, Martin!"
Mr Haxel, Took on a very difficult case for me. He was very knowledgeable about every aspect of the case. Answered all my questions without hesitation. Needless to say, the outcome was way more than I could have expected.
    - Gary H.
    "Thank you, Martin."
When I got injured, I knew I was going to be out of work. I knew I was going to be struggling with my family. I was really worried about the direction my life had turned towards. If I hadn't contacted Martin Haxel. I would still be fighting to get what I deserved. What was owed to me. Mr. Haxel however, stayed with me. He told me the truth. He didn't lie, or manipulate anything. He was honest and informative. He was the hope I didn't have at that time. He struggled with me to get all of it resolved. He did it with integrity, honesty, and a sincere understanding of what I was going through. To anyone considering having Mr. Haxel represent them in similar situations...I would say, you couldn't pick a better person. He's a great lawyer. He does great work. He's a nice person with a lot of experience in this field. If there's anyone you can turn to when no one will listen or even attempt to help you do what is right...Mr. Haxel is the one. I can't say enough good things about him. Now that my case is settled thanks to his work, I'm going to miss having someone having my back. He's a good man and I hope he feels good about what he's done when he lays down to sleep and reflects on his days, weeks, months, and years. People like him, give people hope, and faith that there are good people still roaming around this crazy thing called life. Martin, thank you. You're a beast.
