What are the trends associated with pedestrian accidents?

|

While advances in car safety have decreased the number of fatal car accidents in Illinois, pedestrian accidents remain as dangerous as ever. In fact, the number of pedestrian accidents has been steadily increasing since 2009. Every situation is different, but certain factors can increase the likelihood of a pedestrian being killed in a car accident.

What are the statistics regarding pedestrian accidents?

Since 2009, pedestrian accidents have increased by 53%. People over the age of 70 are the most likely to die in pedestrian accidents, and the vast majority of people who die in pedestrian accidents are male. Studies have also shown that 20% of the pedestrian fatalities in 2018 involved hit-and-run accidents.

The design of the vehicle involved often plays a role in the severity of a pedestrian’s injuries. If a pedestrian is hit by a small vehicle, they’re less likely to suffer from severe injuries. But if they’re hit by a SUV or a large truck, they could easily suffer from severe injuries, disability and even death. Head and pelvis injuries are two of the most common types of injuries associated with pedestrian accidents.

Most pedestrian accidents occur in city areas with lots of traffic. Some cities have tried to mitigate the risk by introducing new design elements like wider sidewalks and barriers between pedestrians and the road. Some cities also try to bring more attention to crosswalks by using lights, signs and signals to warn drivers that people may be crossing ahead. But ultimately, it’s the driver’s responsibility to pay attention to the road and ensure that they don’t pull out in front of a pedestrian.

What can you do if you’re hit by a vehicle?

You were walking through a crosswalk, minding your own business, when a vehicle drove through the intersection and struck you. Whether you suffered from severe injuries or a few minor scrapes, you have the right to seek justice for your injuries. An attorney may help you file a lawsuit against the driver who struck you.
