What is distracted driving?

MILLIONS OF DOLLARS RECOVERED FOR OUR CLIENTS
|

Distracted driving remains a critical issue that affects everyone, regardless of age or experience level. With increasing road traffic and seemingly constant pings from digital devices, it’s more crucial than ever to understand what causes distractions and how they impair the ability to drive safely.

Many people immediately think of mobile phone use when they’re asked to define distracted driving. However, the issue is much broader, encompassing three main types: manual distractions, visual distractions and cognitive distractions. While some distractions include only one of these forms, others include more than one type.

Manual distractions relinquish control

Manual distractions happen when a driver takes one or both hands off the steering wheel. This could be to change the radio station, grab a drink from the cup holder or even adjust the car’s heating or cooling system. It’s easy to underestimate how much these actions can compromise driving.

Visual distractions are more common than you think

Visual distractions pull a driver’s eyes away from the road. Maybe they’re trying to read a text message, or looking at an accident on the side of the road. Whatever the case, their attention is diverted from where it should be.

Cognitive distractions are a silent but severe issue

Cognitive distractions might be the hardest to detect because they involve your mental focus. A person can’t fully concentrate on driving when they’re lost in thought or deeply engrossed in an audiobook or podcast.

Even short distractions can be deadly

If a person is going 55 mph and looks away for just five seconds to grab a snack, they’ll have traveled the length of a football field without looking. That’s plenty of time and distance for something catastrophic to occur. Drivers who need to do something that involves taking their hands off the wheel should find a safe place to pull over first.

Victims of distracted driving crashes often suffer serious injuries that require intensive medical care. This can be costly, and they shouldn’t be responsible for paying these expenses. These individuals may opt to pursue a claim for compensation against a negligently-distracted driver to help cover the financial impact of their harm. Which should serve as even greater motivation for drivers to avoid distractions when operating their vehicles.

    - Ann E.
    "Highly Recommend"
Attorney Martin Haxel fought long and hard for a fair and just settlement. I recommend Haxel Law for your Work Comp case.
    - Karyn S.
    "Thank you, Martin."
When I got injured, I knew I was going to be out of work. I knew I was going to be struggling with my family. I was really worried about the direction my life had turned towards. If I hadn't contacted Martin Haxel. I would still be fighting to get what I deserved. What was owed to me. Mr. Haxel however, stayed with me. He told me the truth. He didn't lie, or manipulate anything. He was honest and informative. He was the hope I didn't have at that time. He struggled with me to get all of it resolved. He did it with integrity, honesty, and a sincere understanding of what I was going through. To anyone considering having Mr. Haxel represent them in similar situations...I would say, you couldn't pick a better person. He's a great lawyer. He does great work. He's a nice person with a lot of experience in this field. If there's anyone you can turn to when no one will listen or even attempt to help you do what is right...Mr. Haxel is the one. I can't say enough good things about him. Now that my case is settled thanks to his work, I'm going to miss having someone having my back. He's a good man and I hope he feels good about what he's done when he lays down to sleep and reflects on his days, weeks, months, and years. People like him, give people hope, and faith that there are good people still roaming around this crazy thing called life. Martin, thank you. You're a beast.
    - Chris Y.

Marty is not only a great lawyer, but a great person!
    - Bobby D.
    "Great Attorney!"
I've used Martin Haxel a couple of times over the years and I have found that each time he is very prompt about responding to my inquiry and is able to talk to me in terms that I can understand!
    - Cindy B.
    "Above & Beyond"
Very pleased how Marty handled my case. I would recommend Hazel Law to anyone needing workman comp representation.
    - Tom M.
    "No One Better"
I was referred to Martin by my original attorney. My original attorney didn't want to spend the time and money to represent me because my case was going to be difficult, time-consuming, and against the City of Champaign. I am so glad that Martin was willing to take my case and see it through. If you have a "hidden injury" like me or even an obvious injury Martin will handle it very professionally and give it the attention that you deserve.
